The Scientist Who Became President
India’s presidents have come from different backgrounds, but only one, Dr A.P. J. Abdul Kalam, was a scientist. The President of India or Rashtraprati is the head of state, head of the armed forces, and first citizen of India. The President is elected by the elected members of the Parliament and the state legislatures and serves for a term of five years. The President lives in a beautiful mansion in New Delhi known as the Rashtrapati Bhavan. We have had thirteen Presidents since our Independence in 1947. The first female President was elected in 2007.
Pakir Jainulabedeen Abdul Kalam was born on 15th October 1931, in Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. His father, Jainulabedeen, did not have much education nor much wealth. Abdul Kalam greatly respected and loved his parents. His father taught him how to be honest and good. His mother taught him to have faith in goodness and to be kind to others.
Abdul Kalam went to a primary school in Rameswaram and then to Schwartz High School in Ramanathpuram. For his higher studies, he went to Tiruchirappalli and then to Chennai, where he studied for a doctorate in aeronautical engineering. Now Dr Kalam, he started working for a company making aircraft in Bangalore. Later, he worked with satellites, rockets, and guided missiles, and became a nuclear scientist. When India launched a satellite at a place called Thumba, Dr Kalam was the Director.
In 2001, Dr Kalam became a university professor. he had the brilliant idea of passing on a message to all young Indians. He wanted young people to have a vision, to be proud of India, and to work hard to make India a great nation. he talked to thousands of young people. And then, in 20002, he became the 11th President of India. but he never forgot about the young people of India- young people just like you.
Dr Kalam was awarded more than 30 honorary degrees from universities around the world. he received the Padma Bhushan in 1981, the Padma Vibhushan in 1990, and India’s highest award for a civilian, the Bharat Ratna, in 1997. It is no wonder that he was made President!
One day, when he had been the President for some time, Dr Kalam made a speech to a large audience. here are some of the points he made in that speech.
I have three visions for India. In 3000 years of our history, people have come and invaded us, captured our lands, and conquered our minds. From Alexander onwards Greeks, the Turks, the Moguls, the Portuguese, the British, the French, the Dutch- all of them came and looted us, took over what was ours. Yet we have not done this to any other nation. We have not grabbed their land, their culture, or their history and tried to make them follow our way of life. Why? Because we respect the freedom of others. That is why my first vision is that of FREEDOM. If we are free no one will respect us.
My second vision for India is DEVELOPMENT. For fifty years we have been a developing nation. It is time we see ourselves as a developed nation.
I have a THIRD vision. India must stand up to the world. because I believe that unless India stands up to the world no one will respect us. Only strength respects strength.
We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories. We are the first in milk production. We are number one in remote sensing satellites. We are the second largest producer of wheat. We are the second largest producer of rice.
You and I will have to build a developed India. you must say this to everyone: (India is not an underdeveloped nation).
You say that our government is inefficient. You say that our laws are too old. you say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage. You say that phones don’t work, the railways are a joke, the airlines are the worst in the world, and letters never reach their destination. you say that our country is the absolute pits. you say, say, and say.
What do you do about it? Take a person on his way to Singapore. Give him a name – YOURS.
Give him a face- YOURS. You walk out of the airport and you are at your best. In Singapore, you don’t throw things on the roads or eat in the stores. you are as proud of their Underground Links as they are.
In Singapore you don’t say anything, do YOU?
YOU wouldn’t dare to eat in public during Ramadan in Dubai. You would not dare to go out without your head covered in Jeddah. You would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London. You would not dare to spend beyond 55mph in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, Do you know who I am? I am so and so’s son. Take your two bucks and get lost.’
You wouldn’t chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand. Why don’t You spit paan on the streets of Tokyo? Why don’t You buy fake certificates in Boston? We are still talking of the same you.
You can respect a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own.
Why cannot you be the same here in India?
